Stories of Autism:
A Brief History
In October of 2005 photographer Charles Cotugno, the father of a child with autism, began Stories of Autism as a small personal project to promote autism awareness. As word spread about the project, more and more families of autism wanted to be part of it and share their experiences with the rest of the world. The project has grown to includes almost fifty subjects and stories so far and continues to expand. These beautiful large format black and white prints have been extensively exhibited in the Seattle area and the project has been featured in several television programs, national magazines, newspapers, and websites.
After several years of creating these portraits Charlie realized he could no longer fund or manage the project on his own. Having been strongly encouraged by others, he assembled a board of directors and established Stories of Autism as a non-profit corporation in September of 2009. This new organization will work with communities around the globe to raise awareness by exhibiting its work, adding portraits from local photographers, and including photographs created by people on the autism spectrum.
